Combating Workplace Fatigue

By Claire Brady, RN

Work fatigue is a problem encountered by office as well as production personnel. There are many remedies that can be employed to address these issues. Practicing a good lifestyle is probably the most beneficial step that can be taken. One should think of oneself as an industrial athlete and prepare for work as such. Adequate sleep and a healthy diet are the most important, not only to sustain life, bur to make us able to perform job tasks readily. We are a reflection of what we eat. Understand and listen to your body.

Be realistic about leisure activity. Exercise, such as walking, swimming. bike riding, etc., not only provide physical benefits, but mental as well. When you are physically and mentally fit, your performance at work, as well as at home, will be enhanced. Take mini-breaks, move, stretch either at your desk or work station. Reeadjust your chair. Height and back support features vary for different sized workers. Position your chair to where you can easily and comfortably reach objects or work.

Do the same with your computer. Utilize proper body mechanics when reaching into bins, files, storage, etc. Use a telephone headset when typing or writing. Plan your writing tasks as well. Use a document holder to place work at its optional position.

Do not spend your lunch period or breaks at your desk or worksite. Take the time to remove yourself into a different area to relax. A short walk will refresh you as you will return to work feeling focused and prepared.

Lasty, leave work problems at work and deal with personal issues at home. Today's workers often bring their work into home and vice versa. You will be able to better serve both your professional and personal needs if you separate each of them.
